Our collaboration with PT. Narama Mandiri transforming the Hop Lun garment factory in Central Java. Rather than starting from scratch with a complete teardown, our design retains the facility's primary structures to minimize construction waste. We aimed to shed the heavy, traditional industrial "face" of the building in favor of a green-oriented, highly sustainable aesthetic that works in harmony with its environment.

This transformation is driven by a multi-layered approach to sustainable engineering and resource efficiency. To reduce reliance on grid electricity, we integrated renewable energy sources, including rooftop wind turbines and north-facing photovoltaic solar arrays. Passive design strategies work in tandem with these active systems; permeable "breeze block" walls and strategic roof openings create natural ventilation, while transparent roofing and skylights flood the interior with daylight to cut down on daytime lamp usage. Additionally, a comprehensive rainwater harvesting system and vegetation-lined permeable paving blocks manage runoff, deliberately reducing both the site's groundwater extraction and its urban heat island effect.

Beyond environmental performance, true sustainability must prioritize the daily experience and well-being of the people inside. By embracing tropical modernism and biophilic design, the upgraded facility now actively supports its workers. We introduced shaded bicycle parking for active commuters, protected walkways to shield against the sun, and dedicated open green spaces for social interaction and recreation. Inside, operable windows ensure continuous fresh air circulation, while abundant indoor greenery helps reduce pollutants, produces oxygen, and creates a soothing, vibrant workplace.
